Simon called on Friday 2nd February at 3.30 p.m. our time to update the blog. The team will fly out on Friday night to return to London, arriving at Heathrow on Saturday afternoon.
Wednesday 31st January (continued)
"We returned to Quito, exhausted but euphoric. The climb was without doubt the hardest thing any of us had ever endured. Of special note were the performances of Colin, Tim and Craig, because Colin is a below knee amputee and Tim and Craig are both upper limb amputees. They all reached the summit - an incredible ahievement, an inspiration to us all.
Our bodies were reeling from the effort but benefited from the rapid reduction in altitude from 5000+ m. to 2800m.
Back in Quito we were reacquainted with hot water, beds with mattresses and clean linen, luxuries we were delighted to see again. We had our first alcoholic drink since leaving England .... and ended up in a Karaoke bar until the wee small hours. The highlight of the karaoke was Sophie (one of the few of us who could actually sing!) singing in a Kazakhstan accent."
Thursday 1st February:
"A recovery day, before the long flight home. We visited the market town of Otovalo. The local Indian population have been successful by maintaining traditional artisan skills such as weaving, carving and painting. An opportunity to buy presents and mementos for family and friends who we are all looking forward to seeing again.
Our thanks to Charity Challenge, our Guides Brian and Nelson for an extremely well organised and guided trip. Thanks to you all for following this blog. The trip has been successful in raising approximately £85,000 for Reach and Steps. Thank you for your support."
